Decapeptyl

Does anyone know if there is an alternative to decapeptyl? My husband has been on it just over 2 years and gets severe depression and mood swings. He had to have a 3 month injection in January as they didn't have the monthly one and life has been hell since. He has turned into a monster and I can't cope with this any longer.

You can ask the consultant or nurse specialist for a change to Zoladex or Prostap to see if they are any better. All can cause depression and mood swings but some men are affected more by one than the others.

Also take into account that it may be the diagnosis that is causing the problem or at least contributing. Would he agree to counselling?

Whatever is going on in his body and mind, you have a right to be safe in your own home and not to feel scared or threatened. Get help from a domestic abuse service if you need it.

Hi,

So sorry to hear about your horrible situation. I have been on 3 monthly Decapeptyl for around three and half years and that along with the diagnosis have played havoc with my emotions. I haven’t become violent or hell to live with but have sought help with it. What does your husband think about seeking help? It can’t be much fun for him either.

What I did was talk it over with my consultant followed by a long chat with my GP. She referred me to the the psychiatric team. I then saw a psychiatrist and a CBT practitioner which resulted in an increase in my dosage of Sertraline and some CBT sessions. Never a mention of changing from Decapeptyl but Consultant did say he would rather not take me off it though.

I have also been practicing mindfulness meditation for sometime now. I can’t say life is now a bowl of cherries but I feel as if I am now doing something about it which I find helpful. That and a loving, caring wife.

I hope you can both find some relief

Dave

Additionally my consultant said it wasn’t just the effects of Decapeptyl causing it.

Hi again Helen,

I notice that you first posted a message about your husband’s behaviour back in Oct. 2018 and again in May last year but you have never said whether you have taken heed of any of the helpful advice given to you on those occasions. If life with your husband has been intolerable for all that time why are you still asking for advice here or indeed still with him...
