Hi I am now 5 months after prostate surgery and like all of us I was left with incontinence but over the 5 months it was getting better I was down to 5/6 tena level 3 pads and 1 all night pad but over the last two weeks it's gone up to 8/9 per day and I can't work out why my son is taking me to Scotland in three weeks time and obviously I am very concerned about going on a 300 + mile journey I just don't understand why thought I was making good progress

Hi Penguins,

I think you should contact your GP and get tested for a water infection.  I had one during my recovery and it would cause you to get through loads of pads.  The good news is that in just a few days after getting the right medicine it was back under control.

Hi Penguins

I think it would be a good idea as suggested to get tested for a water infection to see if that has lead to the increase in Pad usage.

On a general note and for a comparison (although we all progress at different rates) I am 66 ,after 5 months I was on a couple of pads per day and none at night ,7 months after surgery I don’t wear a pad except occasionally if playing golf.My improvement came about when my surgeon got me to increase the Pelvic Floor exercises from 3 sets to 5 .The importance of doing these regularly and correctly can’t be overstated in my opinion, best of luck.👍

Hi Penguins

I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with incontinence in the middle of the recovery period. Like the others mentioned, it may be because of a water infection and it would be good to get it checked out.

There is also medication available to treat incontinence after surgery, which you could speak with your GP about as well.

I hope you can find an answer to your question soon. Wishing you all the best for your recovery

Stay strong. Monitor your condition, consult your doctor if needed, and take breaks during the journey for comfort.  For those exploring psychological evaluations, it’s possible to take mmpi-2 test online free, which provides insight into personality traits and helps individuals understand themselves better.

Hi,

An important thing to bear in mind is that a water infection is not necessarily painful for a man (as it often is for a woman), so it might be a good idea to have that checked periodically if you’re wearing pads.

The others on here have given some very good suggestions, including increasing your pelvic floor exercises.

As for your trip, I can’t speak for your son, but I’ve arranged as many getaways as I can with my OH. Since I live with him, and do our washing, I understand the difficulties of incontinence. I plan ahead to minimise the stress from that. We’ve had a few near misses on walks when I hadn’t properly mapped out where the toilets were — which turned out to be in very public and open places. Lesson learned! I now try to check routes in advance to see where the toilets are, and keep supplies and coins ready just in case. I also ordered a portable urinal in case it’s ever needed while we’re out.

I imagine your son just wants you to have a lovely time together, but that will only happen if you can relax and enjoy yourself. Perhaps tell your son about your difficulties, worries and stresses, so he can plan everything you’ll need to make it a really nice trip for the both of you.
