Worried 😟

My partner, 56,  is just starting this journey and we are yet to have a diagnosis confirmed, we live in Scotland.

12/6/25 - went to GP and asked for PSA test, symptoms of weak flow which have been present for several years, also intermittent lower back pain, again present for several years, however, does have back injury which muddies the waters slightly.

17/6/25 - GP phones, PSA of 134, asked to go for DRE.

18/6/25 - DRE carried out, no signs of enlarged prostate......really not great news with high psahttps://community.macmillan.org.uk/cfs-file/__key/system/emoji/1f926_2D00_1f3fb.svg urgent urology referral sent.‍

19/6/25 - contacted by nuclear medicine, bone scan arranged for 24/6/25.......we now wait😟

The GP has tactically told us that the tests are likely to decide on treatment plan and not rule out diagnosis. The waiting is so hard, I am trying to be as positive as I can.

I have to be honest, Polly, I'm now coming to the endgame.  But equally, my prognosis back when I was diagnosed in January 2019 was 3 to 5 years.  I've had over 6 very good years during which the cancer barely had any impact on my life.

We all plan and hope for the future, but really (and I don't want to sound like a fridge magnet slogan), all we ever have is today.  Even since my diagnosis, treatments have advanced and improved significantly.  See what your consultant recommends, ask questions of them and on here, and don't let the disease define your lives.

All the best,

Craig

Hi Polly,

very sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis.  If you look at my profile you'll see I was in a similar position at my diagnosis, aged 54 - mets across my bones and in pelvic soft tissue.  I had a course of chemo (6 infusions of docetaxel) followed by around 20 zaps of radiotherapy targeting the prostate (which in turn affect the mets) and this proved effective for nearly 3 years, at which point I changed my hormone therapy.

Hopefully your oncologist will give you your husband's treatment plan soon, but in the meantime please try not to worry:  there is every chance your husband can continue to live a normal and active life for several years yet.

Please do ask if you've any questions and I'll do my best to answer.

Polly, I did work with a guy who had a fluctuating PSA that reached 200 at times. Despite three biopsies including two of the template biopsies they never found any prostate cancer.

Infection can cause a raised PSA.

Thanks Chris

Hi Polly,

I'm sorry that you've had to find us, but welcome to the forum. It's lovely to see wives and partners caring enough to seek help and support for their loved ones.

Yes, your husband's PSA is high, but until he's had a biopsy it is difficult to assess his exact condition.

I hope his scan goes well on Tuesday.

The only advice I can give at this stage, is take one step at a time. Deal with each procedure and the results as they come. The diagnosis period is the scariest time. You will feel much better when you know the exact state of play. If further treatment is needed you'll be able to focus on that and your husband's recovery.

I wish you both the best of luck.πŸ‘

Hi Polly. I'm so sorry, and send you and your husband a big hug.

There are men, and partners of men, who regularly post on here, and are dealing with metastatic disease. I'm sure they'll offer you some help and support.
