Blood

This is my 1st post and I’m not used to the site yet so apologies if this has already been covered . I finished my radiotherapy for prostate cancer in March 2020 and feel great , just a little concerned that I have blood in my semen  not bright red but very dark kind of brown colour , there’s not a lot because I don’t produce hardly any now . Is it normal for what little there is to be this colour .
Thanks for any help .

That is a bit odd dark colour suggests old blood. If it were fresh and lots of it I would be worried. I think it is worth asking your oncologist.

It's certainly not something I've experienced myself after RT. Do you have a cancer nurse assigned to you? I'd give them a ring and ask about it.

Best wishes,

Chris

Radiotherapy can cause late onset (> 3 months after treatment, and sometimes years after treatment) bleeding in any of the areas targeted, including prostate, urethra, bladder, and rectum. This is usually harmless unless it's sufficient to make you anemic. If you take any blood thinners, this increases the chances.

These cases do always need to be checked out though, just to be sure they're harmless.

Blood is bright red for a few days after a bleed, but as the blood cells disintegrate and the iron in them is released, it literally goes rusty, and hence rust coloured. I have come across a couple of cases of men who didn't ejaculate until months after a biopsy, and were extremely alarmed to find they had black semen.

Thank you Andy for that very reassuring , I will give them a ring to be on safe side but I feel a lot better after reading that .
